Wellfleet First Day Hike Refreshing Start to New Year

Jan 5, 2025

The Wellfleet First Day Walk was titled The Gut to the Herring River Overlook. The Wellfleet Conservation Trust and the Friends of the Herring River sponsored it. Thirty walkers from six different Cape towns participated in the 2-hour 2, 2-mile walk. It started at the Great Island parking lot, proceeded to the Gut, and crossed to Chequessett Neck Road. From there, it crossed the Herring River on the temporary pedestrian bridge and onto the Herring River Overlook parking lot. The group then proceeded along the Overlook’s 1.0 mile circular path, which took in the spectacular views of the Herring River estuary below. Topics discussed at stops along the way included a Native American burial site, geology of the area, the record dolphin stranding, the controversial house that is being lost to erosion, acquisition by the Wellfleet Conservation Trust of the land overlooking the river and an update on the Herring River Restoration project.
