Donald Palladino Scholarship and Fellowship

Don Palladino (1936-2018) was a founding member and President of Friends of Herring River. He was also a Trustee and Treasurer of the Wellfleet Conservation Trust, and a member of the Boards of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod and Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Wellfleet. A community leader in efforts to restore the Herring River estuary to its natural tidal flow, Don appreciated the natural beauty of Cape Cod and understood the importance of protecting the environment for the enjoyment of everyone – now and in the future.

Don graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1958 and earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Illinois. He had a distinguished career in the military, retiring with the rank of Brigadier General. Following the military, he took a position as Vice President for architecture and construction at NBC in New York City. He ended his professional career in service to the international child assistance organization, Save the Children.

Since Don’s passing in May of 2018, Friends of Herring River has established two awards in his memory.

The Donald Palladino Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually to a graduating senior from Nauset Regional High School who has been accepted at an accredited college or university and intends to major in Natural Science, Environmental Science/Studies or Engineering. Please contact the NRHS Guidance Department for more information.

The Donald Palladino Fellowship is an award of up to $4,000 available to a young scientist for research in the Herring River or Wellfleet Harbor.

Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, the Award will not be given in 2024. We hope to accept applications for the Award again next year.
