Federal and state officials joined approximately 100 community leaders on Friday, March 31, 2023 to mark the start of construction of the Chequessett Neck bridge, the first and largest infrastructure component of the Herring River Restoration Project..
Wellfleet Town Administrator, Richard Waldo, welcomed the crowd gathered at landing next to the existing dike. “Seeing the bridge construction get underway is very rewarding for the Town, the Cape Cod National Seashore and our other state and federal partners who have worked for more than two decades to reach this point,” Richard Waldo said. The speaking program, with emcee Carole Ridley, Project Coordinator, also included: Brian Carlstrom, Superintendent, Cape Cod National Seashore; Congressman William Keating, US House of Representatives; Sen. Edward Markey, US Senate, represented by James Cantwell, State Director and Ben Thomas, Regional Director; Sen. Julian Cyr, Cape & Islands District Rep. Sarah Peake, 4th Barnstable District; Rebecca Tepper, Secretary, MA Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs; Daniel Wright, State Conservationist, US Department of Agriculture, Natural Resource Conservation Service; Carrie Robinson, Director, Office of Habitat Conservation, NOAA Fisheries – confirmed Wendi Weber, Deputy Director, US Fish and Wildlife Service; Christa Drew, Chair, Executive Director, Friends of Herring River.
